6.30 pm
I was about to do the dishes when I noticed a fire engine, an ambulance and a “Red Rhino” arriving downstairs. Soon, I noticed the man walking back and forth on the edge of the rooftop.
As more and more people gathered to see what was happening, he sat down at the edge, his back facing the air, perhaps to rethink his decision.
7.15 pm
He dangled his left leg down, but only for a few seconds, then he raised it back.
8.15 pm
He dangled his left leg again.
I thought it was just another tease, but this time he really attempted to jump! Luckily, the Civil Defence personnel managed to grab him in time, so he failed.
There was loud cheer and applause from the ’spectators’ on the ground.
Everyone then crowded around the ground lift lobby of the block to see who the man was. There was great suspense in the air as people waited for the man to come down.
There was quite a funny sight at the end: the man was already secured to a cot stretcher, and there was a massive crowd waiting for him to be pushed towards the ambulance, which already was in front of the block. Perhaps to avoid that crowd, the Civil Defence personnel pushed his stretcher from the other side of the block, and to comic effect, all the “kaypoh” people followed suit!
I witnessed all this from the window of my house.
Perhaps tomorrow’s newspapers will have the juicy details.
