On nudity in ANTM

Watch: Girl-Girl Nude Shoot from ANTM Cycle 2

I thought modelling had something to do with showing off clothing and fashion. But with modelling of such a variety, where there is absolutely no clothing or fashion involved, where the whole purpose is to show off the “sensual”1, there can be no doubt that it is just pornography. Could the viewers be so deceived?

So what if I were wrong? So what if there were such a thing as modelling for the sake of modelling? This is yet another calculated measure to push the forbidden into the realm of public normality. It is a cultural product so subtle from whose very existence we would be asinine not to see through its furtive intentions. And it’s not about who’s watching and who isn’t2: its mere existence is a cause for alarm.

Outwardly, the industry3 is telling us that “this is fun”, but subliminally, it is drumming into our heads that “this is acceptable”, that “this is wholly innocent”, that “it’s okay to have a bunch of guys photographing nude women”, that “it’s perfectly fine to use such a scene as part of public entertainment”…

“It’s okay to have the world watch this. It’s only entertainment, isn’t it?”

Everything is less of how it appears than what it suggests.

  1. Synonyms: sexually attractive, sexy, voluptuous, sultry, seductive, passionate; sexually arousing, erotic []
  2. Take for example, actual pornography. If the question were about who consumes it and who doesn’t, then the world should be content with the separation of consumers and non-consumers, with the two groups not interfering with each other’s business. Such is the position of current legislation, which purports to restrict pornography from the access of minors. However, people are still unhappy, because this is still far from the optimal situation of having pornography completely obliterated. In actual fact, the mere existence of pornography is a cause for concern. []
  3. This doesn’t do justice to the word “industry”. Industry is concerned with the manufacture of goods: note the positive connotations. However, typically under-informed economics does not take into account the social bads arising from the manufacture of such ‘goods’ as those in question. []
