If the face of Islam is a woman of reddened lips, thick blue eyeliner, and artificial eyebrows, then let me not be a part of it.
The assertion of a ‘Singaporean Muslim identity1’ (possibly as apart from other ‘Muslim identities’) already contradicts Islam’s spirit of universal inclusiveness. I believe this to be a fine example of a concerted effort to break the universal solidarity of Islam. In Malay, they call this “memecah-belahkan masyarakat”, in particular, “masyarakat Islam sejagat”.
As is always reminded to us, Islam as a deen is Rahmatan Lil ‘Aalameen2, not Rahmatan Lil Singapore. I cannot vouch for an “arus kemodenan” that is fueled by riba’ and pays little concern to basic principles of justice and equality.
Allah knows best.
