Quickly save URLs on del.icio.us from Opera

Opera has been my preferred web browser of late for the speed and low memory consumption, and the ability to block ads and trackers to a reasonable extent, albeit in a rather inelegant way (I am using Fanboy’s ad blocking list).

What put me off Opera before this was the lack of integration with del.icio.us, which is my primary store for Web bookmarks (you can see my latest bookmarks in the right column).

Lucky for you, I have found a simple way.

You see, del.icio.us provides bookmarklets for posting URLs from browsers without plugins (such as Opera). However, the inconvenience is in accessing the bookmarklet from the bookmarks dropdown everytime, or even adding the bookmarklet to the bookmarks toolbar (called the ‘Personal bar’ in Opera), which I do not use at all and do not wish to display.

Solution: Add it to your Opera Speed Dial.

I’ve gotten it on Speed Dial 9, so I can quickly add bookmarks by Command+9 (or Control+9, depending on whether you use Mac/Linux/Windows).

Catch: If you use the default bookmarklet provided on the del.icio.us page, the posting page will be of 500 pixels width, which can look rather ugly if you want to add some long notes. Because of this, I am providing a modified bookmarklet which I am using, which maximises the width of the posting page. Here it is:

Bookmark this on del.icio.us (modified)

Enjoy Opera.
